League Representative Program

Fairfield County USBC is kicking-off its League Representative program.
Our mission, is to assign one of our directors to every sanctioned Fall league within our association (Brookfield Lanes & Lores Lanes)...with the intent of providing the league officers/members with a "point of contact" to help answer questions, resolve league issues and to generally help promote the sport of bowling in our community.

League Representative Role and Procedure

The league representative’s role should be three-fold role:

1)       Act as the liaison between the local league officers and members for engaging the appropriate individuals to resolve issues/concerns.

Examples (not limited to these)

-Sanction Fees/Awards:  Educate the league secretary in the proper procedures & appropriate forms to use for submitting USBC sanction fee payments, honor scores, and national/local awards.

-Playing Rules:  The league representative must understand and be able to communicate the USBC Playing Rules to help league officers resolve issues concerning league play (ie.  Know when a league rule is “illegal’)

2)        Act as the liaison between the league officers/members and the GDUSBC Association.  The league representative will need to be well versed in the USBC League Operations Handbook as well as know the structure of the GDUSBC board and its committees.  The league representative will need be able to engage the appropriate GDUSBC committee member(s) for resolving related issues/concerns.

3)   Ensure the GDUSBC Association is represented in a positive light whenever dealing with the general public. It is our mission to help promote a positive image of the sport of bowling, which involves maintaining good relationships with press columnists, bowling center proprietors and fellow bowlers.

League Contacts and Representative Listing

Each director should have already received a copy of the following:

                                USBC Playing Rules

                                League Operations Manual

                                Average Books

Education:

One of the more important aspects of a league representative will be the education of league officers. Many new officers are unsure of the responsibilities of the office that they hold. They will have questions on how to fill out the paperwork such as the league sanction application and dues worksheets. You are not expected to do the job for them, but should be familiar enough with the process to answer any questions that they may have.

Two sources of information are provided to league officers.

                The League Operations Handbook

                USBC Playing Rules

These are essential tools for both the officers and yourself. You should have a basic understanding of each officer’s duties, together with the aspects of league operation. You do NOT have to memorize all the rules and procedures outlined within these books. Just be familiar enough to help guide them.

Rules:

Once again you are not expected to understand or memorize all the rules of play. If a league has a problem that involves the rules, or a complaint* is addressed regarding how the league handled a particular situation it will be your responsibility to notify the rules committee so they can determine the proper action if any is necessary. The rules committee will determine the validity of the rule in question, and respond to you directly. Of course if it is a simple rule feel free to handle it yourself, however you should not attempt to solve all the rules challenges on your own. You should ask the league secretary to supply you a copy of the league rules, many questions can be handled by simple review of the league rules and the USBC playing rules.

* Must be a written complaint. Should you receive a written complaint from any member, you must forward this immediately to the proper official. It is important to remember that a verbal rules challenge is a question. It can not be acted upon officially until the complaint is written.

Communication:

It will be the league representative’s responsibility to maintain monthly contact with the league, either in person or via a simple phone call. Items to be addressed would include but not be limited to the following: ensuring award applications are submitted and fulfilled, notifying league officers and members about upcoming Association events such as tournaments, open meetings, and elections; providing the league officers with any necessary applications and forms including Hall of Fame, and Association Director Nominations.

Incentive Program

The GDUSBC Association will continue its “Membership Incentive Bonus Program” for the 2011-2012 bowling season.  This program will provide either $25 to any adult bowler or a non-monetary incentive for youth bowlers in any 2011-2012 sanctioned league who signs-up a previously non-sanctioned bowler(s).  This program is supported by the owners of both Lores Lanes-New Milford,CT and Brookfield Lanes-Brookfield,CT.

Here’s how it works:

For Adults

If a sanctioned league bowler brings a “new bowler(s)” into an adult sanctioned league as a direct result of our incentive program (a new bowler is anyone not previously sanctioned in the GDUSBC Association for the past 2 seasons)… once the new bowler(s) completes 25 weeks of bowling (minimum requirement for incentive eligibility)… the league bowler will be eligible for a $25 “incentive bonus” for bringing in a new bowler(s) to our association.

NOTE:  Each new bowler must be specifically identified to both the league secretary and bowling center management at the start of the bowling season.  Failure to do so will result in ineligibility of this incentive.

Once the new bowler(s) complete their 25th week of bowling, the secretary/treasurer must submit an incentive voucher to the bowling center manager for each league bowler that was eligible to receive an incentive bonus (see attached vouchers that can be re-produced locally)  Your league lineage fees will then be reduced by the amount of incentive bonuses paid-out that week.  Thereby, this program is being funded by the bowling center…not the league itself.

NOTE:  A copy of each voucher should also be left for our association manager (Joel Reichin) in the mail slot at either of these bowling centers…for our record keeping purposes.

For Youth

If a sanctioned youth bowler brings a “new bowler(s)” into a youth sanctioned league as a direct result of our incentive program (a new bowler is anyone not previously sanctioned in the GDUSBC Association for the past 2 seasons)...once the new bowler(s) complete ½  of the league season (minimum requirement for incentive eligibility)… the youth league bowler will be eligible for a non-monetary “incentive bonus” for bringing in a new bowler (s) to our association

NOTE:  Each new bowler must be specifically identified to both the league secretary and bowling center management at the start of the bowling season.  Failure to do so will result in ineligibility of this incentive.

Once the new bowler(s) complete of ½ of the league season, the secretary/treasurer must submit an incentive voucher to the bowling center management for each youth bowler that was eligible to receive the incentive bonus. (see attached vouchers that can be re-produced locally)  The bowling center management will then determine the incentive award to be given (e.g. free game passes, movie tickets, etc.)

This incentive program will apply to both adult & youth sanctioned leagues. Summer leagues and GDUSBC Association board members are not eligible to participate.  The GDUSBC Association feels the continuation of this incentive program will encourage league bowlers to help bolster new memberships and add vitality to the leagues in our association.
